  1. Item: Technics SP-10 MK2 (Mint) + New Acrylic Plinth + Bonus Custom Dustcover Location: VIC 3030 Price: $1900 (it is much below net cost) Item Condition: MINT Reason for selling: NLR Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: When I got hooked into vinyl about 7 months ago, I dreamed about owning SP-10 and build acrylic plinth instead of wooden plinth so it looks modern, clean and neat similar to Marantz TT1000. I have hunted for an absolutely mint condition of SP-10 MK2 with all of accessories (power supply as well as remote) and finally found one in Japan. The previous owner (in Japan) did not use this at all but stored and decide to let it go so arranged to bring this baby and I was very impressed when I receive it. It is just superb condition in every parts. Motor unit, Power Supply and even remote is absolutely pristine condition and works flawlessly. Since the motor and power supply are imported from Japan, it requires Step-Down Transformer and I will include brand new TorTech Step Down Transformer that i recently purchased for this so new owner does not need to purchase one. The S/D transformer is designed 24/7 operation and dead quiet without any hum or noise. Simply plug and forget about it. Custom plinth and feet and ball bearing between smaller stainless steel feet and bigger acrylic feet all brand new and it matches with SP-10 so well and looks just glorious. The plinth is quite bigger than typical turntable in order to accomodate 9" to 12" tonearm comfortably and already created slot for SME 3009 and 3012 tonearms. If you have these, then this would be perfect and you just put there and off you go. If you have any other tonearm, it should be straightforward, too and just fix it at right spot in the slot with screws to achieve right pivot to spindle distance. The size of plinth is 55cm wide and 45cm deep and large acrylic feet is coming off a bit so need 2cm extra space around. [BONUS] I will include matching custom dustcover (costed me over $250) which is brand new but it got a hairline crack on top during transit. It it still solid and match perfectly with the whole unit. I will even try to get the hairline crack repaired for new owner. I would be very sad to letting this baby go ? but I recently realised that I take more joy tinkering with budget vintage TT with budget cartridge and try to tweak it each time (Call me a weirdo...) Happy to demo to local. If buyer is in another state, I can ship them but shipping would be a bit more expensive than usual since it is large and very heavy and might need to ship in two separate boxes. (It would be between $60 to metro cities and $90 to rural places in AU) Whole thing costed me much more than asking price (Motor unit, power supply and remote costed $1500 landed. Plinth, feet, dustcover and step-down transformer costed me another $850) and I really hope it goes to great fellow SNAer who appreciate fine audio gear and also have great tonearm & cartridge to match it with instead of random person. I am confident that new owner will be impressed with overall condition and quality of the unit and it will be hard pressed to find this condition of motor, power supply and remote alone at asking price. Thank you for looking... Pictures:

  2. I have a vivid memory of conversations I have had at parties regarding audio when I was young. Information was harder to come by back then, and I was eager to learn from others. At this stage I had upgraded my stereo record player - on my extremely limited student income - to very entry level stereo system. At one party I met a medical student who was being very snobbish to me at my low quality system, for he had a Meridian system that was much better, and he was enjoying making sure I was acutely aware of the quality differential of our two systems. I was thinking how much I would love to eventually have equipment of that level in my life (I also assume he didn't do part-time labouring work at minimal pay rates to be able to purchase his system). I met another guy at the same party. He was memorable in his passion for music. He had a stereo and adored it, for it delivered music for him to enjoy, and there was no doubting that every morsel of music was savoured to the fullest extent. The passion he extruded was inspiring. Also inspiring was the quality of his equipment - it was crap, even compared to my very entry-level system. But that didn't matter to him. The contrast of those two guys has stayed with me. One was an audiophile - he appreciated and loved the sound from his system, despite that it was nothing to boast about. It was not about the delivery system, it was about appreciating to the fullest what was delivered The other enjoyed boasting about his high-end equipment, but I didn't detect any passion for the music.

  5. I'm at the pointy end of commissioning the first of my completely hand-built 6 Channel SET monoblocs. I started with a basic circuit and had Lucas of Black Art Audio custom wind all the iron apart from output transformers, and designed the chassis around them. Here is the first amp undergoing some testing on my electronics bench. Note the power supply sitting on the floor...it weighs about 100kg and has three umbilical cables up to the amplifier: one for services and startup/shutdown protocol control and indication; one for the ac filaments/heaters; one for high voltage DC. I've really left no stone un-turned when designing and building this amp and at this stage there is not too much that I would change about its layout and operation. All six channels are driven by 6e5p or 6e6p tubes in triode mode. Each amplifier is designed and tuned for a specific frequency range and transducer to which it is directly connected. No passive crossovers...electronic filters are included at the input of each channel. Power tubes vary according to the intended load: full 6c33c for the bass channel; half 6C33C for mid-bass channel; half 6c33c for upper-bass channel; lower mids uses no power tube and is a single stage stage amp; mid-range can be adjusted for 2.5v and 4v DHT tubes such as 2a3, 45, YO186, RE604, KL71403 et cetera; the HF amp is direct coupled to the transformer integrated in the RAAL ribbon transducer and again is a single stage triode. Here it is in full glow late in the afternoon with curtains drawn. Those two purple gas regulator tubes are for the unusual bias arrangement and enable this amp to be DC coupled. I've got to find some time to measure and evaluate all the channels, and then finish building the second monobloc.

  9. I sent @Ittaku a 44/16 version of Kamen 'Robin Hood' from Telarc's collection of their "finest recordings" CD-89110 and he kindly upsampled it to 88k using his extreme filtering software with 77 m taps. The piece starts with cellos playing rhythmically and the first thing I noticed was the notes started & stopped more quickly so that they were much better differentiated. Then the tympani comes in - and it had greater power and definition. Later there is some very complicated full orchestral playing that was again better differentiated (one of the reasons I chose the piece) with the triangle seeming much clearer & sparklier. And I found myself head-nodding/foot-tapping more through the piece so was more emotionally involved. I also tried upsampling the recording to 88k using my freebie r8btrain program that I have used extensively in the past but although gave some of the above effects they were nowhere near a great. So many thanks Con. All I need to now be able to do it myself!

  20. Item: Linn Uphorik Phono Stage Location: Sydney Price: $2,450 Item Condition: Used (in excellent condition) Reason for selling: downsizing Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: I am selling my Linn Uphorik Phono Pre-amplifier which I have been using with my LP12 for the last few years. The unit is in excellent condition and is fully functional. The metal case is also in top condition without scratches or damages. Full original packing, power cords, manual are available. Uphorik is an outstanding photo stage selling for over $5,000 in Australia. It represents a breakthrough in standalone phono stage design offering separate dedicated inputs and circuits for MM and MC cartridges in either RCA or XLR connection. This unit will compliment perfectly to a Linn LP12 but will produce amazing sound with other top end turntable. It's MC section is especially sweet. There are plenty of reviews about the Uphorik in internet. I am happy to post anywhere in Australia at buyers cost. Happy to answer any questions about this unit. Pictures:

  21. Just downloaded it thanks. And yes I think I could hear non-trivial differences between 352k version and the 88k one. The introductory rhythmic strings that begin very quietly seemed to be better differentiated against a 'black' background quiet; the loud sudden tympani seemed to have more 'impact'; the horns seemed to have a bit more 'bite'; and in the very complex passages the individual instruments seemed better differentiated. Perhaps more importantly I found myself hanging on every note with my whole body - something I do at a good live orchestral concert, much to the annoyance of my wife (who is English)!

  30. Sort of. The photos were taken with all the external panels removed to provide easy access to the internals for testing. When those panels go on the amp will look more retro-futuristic i.e. vintage styling with slightly modern lines. I'll add photos when I get to that stage.

  33. Ok so a German review has the N5 pretty much on par with the x7900 and a kiwi review has the N9 light years ahead of the x9900. Maybe the N9 is just that much better than the N5 and at the price point it should be.

  37. One option is to have hifi rack that is both black and silver in colour. It will compliment both colours of components. I purchased a Tauris rack recently, and although all my components are black, I reckon introducing a silver component wouldn’t look out of place in this rack. https://clefhifi.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=50&products_id=2330&osCsid=ekmu2uck8km3o43kdjcdba1a70

  41. 16/44.1 format is not compromised at all 16/44.1 encoding can capture more info then any human can extract the compromise comes in the recording engineering and playback chain with the right play back chain 16/44.1 files can sound identical to "hirez" files an impaired playback chain can sound better with "hirez" but if that's your case don't blame 16/44.1

  44. My listening tonight has been guitarcentric, and here I continue on that theme. This Japanese pressing has brought about a thought, whenever I purchase a number of records from the one collection, the Jap pressings always are the ones in best condition. Is it because they are better cared for, or is it the material they are made from? The black of the vinyl always seems blacker (as does the audio background), and the surface is less tarnished. Some gentle reinterpretations of well known and popular songs on this, with touches of virtuosity. Wes is joined here by Ray Barretto on congas, Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on skins, George Devens on vibes, and a cast of many on violin and cello.

  46. A little of the long weekend's highlights... Jeff Buckley - Grace (2LP 45rpm ORG repress) - no words for this. Everything has been said. Three Days Grace - Human (2015 US) - alt rock in the vein of Linkin Park. Except way younger...and way less good. Wifey's fave spin... Beck - Morning Phase (2014 US) - 'Sea Change' seems to get all the raps, but I reckon this Grammy Award winner kills it. Chris Cornell - Songbook (2LP Friday Music) - remarkable sounding album. Every bit as good sounding as 'Grace'. Every song a winner. LOVE. Keane - Under The Iron Sea (repress) - such a shame the OG is so exxy, and so much better sounding than this one (so I've heard). Massive Attack - Blue Lines (2016 repress) - excellent SQ throughout. Powerfully good on a quiet Sunday morn. Air - Moon Safari (French OG) - scratched and occasionally crackly, this OG still outdoes most represses these days. Have always loved this album. Queens of the Stone Age - Villains (OG) - probably a good album rather than a great one, this never lived up to it's hyped promise for me. I like about half of it. And that half is pretty nice.
